2013 is The International Year of Statistics
Coming from 108 countries, more than 1,400 organizations have joined an initiative to celebrate 2013 as the international year of statistics. The founding organizations of the International Year of Statistics - also called Statistics2013 - are the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics, International Biometric Society, International Statistical Institute, and Royal Statistical Society.
According to the website dedicated to the year of statistics, the campaign’s primary objectives are to do the following:
- Increase public awareness of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society
- Nurture statistics as a profession, especially among young people
- Promote creativity and development in the sciences of probability and statistics

I believe one challenge of popularization of statistics is… storytelling. People don’t want maths and spreadsheets full of figures. They want graphics, and they want stories! To promote this international event, SAS – a partner of Statistics 2013 – produced a short video explaining where statistics are in a 2013 life. A great example of storytelling about statistics, in the video you can watch below.
